General Surgery Residency

The Brookwood Baptist Health General Surgery Residency Program strives to create a superior community hospital learning environment for our trainees that provides them with the skill, knowledge and judgement to be successful practitioners with a community care focus in the State of Alabama and the Southeast. Our goal is to prepare our graduates for board certification and to enter the independent practice of surgery upon graduation or to enter a fellowship program of their choice. We believe that optimal training of surgeons occurs in a collegial atmosphere, where patients and professional colleagues are treated with respect and sensitivity to their needs as persons. Our program's graduates will be prepared to offer compassionate, patient-centered, evidence-based medical care to the people of our service area consistent with the Mission of Brookwood Baptist Health "To extend the healing ministry of Christ through holistic, people-centered health care".

Brookwood Baptist Health offers two options for training in general surgery: a five-year Categorical program (#1903440C0), leading to eligibility for examination by the American Board of Surgery; and a Preliminary program (#1903440P0) offering preparation for further training in a surgical or related specialty.

Application Information

Programs receive applications sent electronically only via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Visa Information

Brookwood Baptist Health will consider only J-1 Visa applications sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Generally, BBH will not sponsor H-1B Visa applications.

USMLE/COMLEX

You should have completed USMLE or COMLEX II prior to beginning the residency program. If not successfully completed prior to the beginning of the residency program, then Step II (including the Clinical Skills Examination) must be successfully completed before completion of the first six months of residency training. Residents must register to take USMLE or COMLEX III prior to the completion of the first year of residency training. Step III must be successfully completed before the resident will be renewed to continue beyond the second year of training. Individual residency programs may invoke more stringent requirements.
