Welcome, and thank you for your interest in our program!

My name is Shields Frey, and I have been the General Surgery Program Director for Brookwood Baptist Health for the past 14 years. Prior to that, I was the Associate Program Director for 5 years, and I have served on the teaching faculty since finishing residency in 1988. I have immensely enjoyed each and every position I have held in the program over the years, and my interactions with our residents have always been a richly gratifying experience for me.

I grew up in the Birmingham area and attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. After graduating from the UAB School of Medicine, I matched into General Surgery at Brookwood Baptist Health.

My career in general surgery would be described as the traditional general surgical type of practice. For the most part this has included abdominal, breast, colorectal, hernias, thyroid and endoscopic procedures. I have been active in the American College of Surgeons and have served on the Executive Council of the Alabama Chapter of the ACS, serving as President from 2016-2017. Currently I am one of two Governors who represent the State of Alabama to the American College of Surgeons. My specific role is serving on the Residency Training Workgroup. I am also Chairman of the Committee on Applicants for Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons for Alabama.

On a personal note, I have been married to my wonderfully supportive wife, Page, for 45 years. We have three children and three lovely grandchildren.

My interests include Alabama football, travel, Lake Martin, music, and spending time with family and friends.'

I would love to talk with you about the Brookwood Baptist Health General Surgery Residency Program.

Sincerely,
E. Shields Frey, MD, FACS
